Dimensional fibre.
Knitting is for me a performance. A way to express my art as through a medium that portrays and encapsulates memory. Connecting past and present. What I battle with every day is the notion of "craft". Knitting is not "real art". A collective male bias. Knitting is a highly labour intensive art - probably the most labour intensive practice. It provides me with a social language, a common thread established firmly in tradition passed down through generations of my family. The repetitiveness of the practice, forms a type of meditation where I have conversations with long dead ancestors but their fingers, their rhythm, their collective knowledge continues. I love the start of a new project, the possibilities and the unexpected nuances that occur. History and time interwoven with stories from the past. If I don't hold on to these and explore and retell these stories, who will?
